Descrição
This dataset presents a collection of macroalgae records obtained from Bustamante Bay and Camarones, situated within the Parque Interjurisdiccional Marino Costero Patagonia Austral (PIMCPA) in Argentina. The study area, known for its ecological importance and past exploitation of macroalgae, showcases a remarkable biodiversity of macroalgae, with the presence of Macrocystis pyrifera giant kelp forests. Through meticulous sampling conducted across seasons and through diving techniques, the dataset offers a robust and up-to-date resource for understanding the richness dynamics and distribution patterns of macroalgae in this coastal region. By selecting sites with visible and expansive kelp forests spanning over 100 meters, the study captures a representative sample of the macroalgae community assemblages associated with kelp forest, shedding light on their ecological significance within the marine protected area. The taxonomic identification of the specimens was carried out by a specialist using microscopes or magnifying glasses, histological sections and stains and each specimen was identified at the lowest taxonomic level possible. Additionally, each specimen was preserved through exsiccata and silica gel for long-term storage and reference purposes.

Cobertura Geográfica
The study area is located at Chubut Province, North Patagonia (Argentina, SW Atlantic coast), within the Parque Interjurisdiccional Marino Costero Patagonia Austral (PIMCPA) and its surrounding areas. The PIMCPA is the first marine coastal reserve in Argentina and the area is known for its ecological significance and biodiversity. The sampling sites were situated along the coastline, 2 sites in Bustamante Bay and 1 in front of Camarones city. It is noteworthy to mention that in the past, this area held significant importance for the extraction of macroalgae. Due to its abundant macroalgae resources, the coastal region experienced extensive harvesting activities. For the selection of sampling sites, the presence of detectable Macrocystis pyrifera kelp forests from the surface with a minimum span of over 100 meters was sought. This criterion was utilized to ensure the inclusion of well-established and expansive macroalgae habitats within the study area. The ability to visually identify these kelp forests from the surface aided in the efficient selection of sites for data collection. By focusing on locations with substantial macroalgae coverage, the study aimed to capture a representative sample of the macroalgae community assemblages and its associated biodiversity.

Dados Sobre o Projeto
Through the combination of scientific techniques, educational instances, and creative communication strategies, this project aimed to update and make available information about marine macroalgae in the area of the Interjurisdictional Coastal Marine Park Austral Patagonia (PIMCPA), Chubut, Argentina. To achieve this, we conducted a seasonal sampling throughout a year monitoring benthic communities with an emphasis on marine macroalgae associated with rocky reefs in the PIMCPA.As a result, we updated the record of macroalgae species richness in the study area. Furthermore, we created instances of knowledge transfer with guests from Bahía Bustamante Lodge, using art, experimentation, and participatory methods for naturalist recording, in order to deepen the sensitive connection with the natural and cultural heritage of the Patagonian sea, promoting knowledge and appreciation of marine algae and their natural environment. Finally, we developed strategies for disseminating the knowledge associated with our project to enhance the general public's reflection on the importance of algae and a healthy ocean in our daily lives. Some of these strategies included sharing our photographic record on the citizen science platform iNaturalist, contributing to the development of material for the "Oceans" exhibition at the Cultural Center of Science (Buenos Aires, Argentina), and creating a website for public access to our scientific field reports and other educational resources. The project has the research permit from the protected area Parque Interjurisdiccional Marino Costero Patagonia Austral, with authorization number 1732.

Descrição da Área de Estudo | Our study area is located at Parque Interjurisdiccional Marino Costero Patagonia Austral (PIMCPA) which is considered part of the Magellanic province of the South Atlantic American Domain. Its coastal, marine, and insular area is distinguished by a wide tidal range and a significant proportion of rocky shores that provide suitable habitats for the settlement of macroalgae, particularly in bay and cove areas such as Bahía Bustamante and Bahía Camarones, which have been selected for the present sampling. |
Descrição do Design | The primary objective of this study was to provide a comprehensive description of macroalgae species in Bustamante Bay and Camarones town. With a focus on taxonomic identification and documentation, the study aimed to create an extensive record of the macroalgae biodiversity in the area. Through meticulous field sampling and subsequent laboratory analysis, the research sought to identify and describe the various macroalgae species present, considering their morphological and phenological characteristics, seasonality and taxonomic relationships. |

Métodos de Amostragem
The sampling methodology employed in this study followed a systematic approach. Initially, sampling locations were selected based on easy coastal access and the presence of macroalgae kelp forests spanning over 100 meters. Throughout the sampling campaigns, diving activities were conducted for a duration of 30-45 minutes at an average depth of 5 meters. Two experienced marine biologists with expertise in the identification of benthic marine species, particularly macroalgae, performed erratic transects during the dives, collecting at least one individual of each of the observed species . The distance covered by the divers exceeded 100 meters in most cases. Both divers possessed in-depth knowledge of the local species, enabling them to identify the collected specimens in situ. Subsequently, the samples were preserved in seawater and transported to the laboratory for taxonomic identification. Stereoscopic magnifying glass and microscopes were utilized to examine the necessary morphological features for accurate identification. Following identification, the specimens were pressed and preserved as exsiccata, with a portion of each specimen stored in silica gel for further molecular analysis. It should be noted that not all samples collected by the divers were pressed; generally, only one representative specimen per species per site was preserved and added to the herbarium.
Área de Estudo | The sampling sites chosen for this study were located in two areas of Cabo Aristizabal, specifically Casa de Gas (-45.20744, -66.52087) and Playa Viga (-45.20355, -66.51847), known by the names commonly used by the locals. Additionally, Rocas Coloradas (-44.79891, -65.70137) in the coast of Camarones City was also selected as a sampling site. These sites were chosen based on their ecological relevance and the presence of diverse macroalgae habitats. Due to the seasonality of most of the macroalgae species, the sampling campaigns were performed on four dates, representative of each season, to capture these variations. The sampling dates were as follows: August 1, 2021 (Winter), November 20, 2021 (Spring), January 30, 2022 (Summer), and April 29, 2022 (Autumn). |

Descrição dos passos do método:
- Site Selection: Sampling locations were chosen based on two criteria: easy coastal access and the presence of macroalgae forests spanning over 100 meters.
- Diving Activities: During the sampling campaigns, diving activities were conducted for a duration of 30-45 minutes at an average depth of 5 meters. Two experienced marine biologists performed erratic transects during the dives, covering a distance exceeding 100 meters in most cases. They collected various macroalgae species encountered along the way.
- Sample Preservation and Transportation: The collected samples were preserved in seawater to maintain their viability and transported to the laboratory for further analysis.
- Taxonomic Identification: In the laboratory, stereoscopic magnifying glass and microscopes were utilized to examine the morphological features necessary for accurate taxonomic identification. The validity of the names of all the taxa were verified following the database: https://www.algaebase.org/
- Preservation: Once identified, the specimens were pressed and preserved as exsiccata. Additionally, a portion of each specimen was stored in silica gel for potential future molecular analysis. All the vouchers preserved as exsiccata and their corresponding vouchers in silica gel, were added to the “Marine Macroalgae Herbarium” of the CESIMAR - CENPAT (Center for the Study of Marine Systems- National Patagonian Center) for long-term storage and reference purposes.
